Sweater weather has arrived: Hot fall fashion trends

Even before the fall 2017 fashion shows wrapped in March, there was no question that the official color of the season was red, with a variety of crimson tones popping up in at least one look on a majority of the runways.

The powerful color definitely packs a punch, especially when worn from head to toe, as seen at Max Mara and Fendi, which both sent several models down the runway fully decked out in the hue. Max Mara’s luxe layers not only mixed textures (plush coats sat atop ribbed sweaters and velour bottoms) but various shades as well, proving that well-placed burgundy need not clash with sassy scarlet.

Vibrant and versatile, the color also appeared in designs ranging from feminine, lacy gowns at Valentino to sporty separates at Jil Sander.

But even if you’re not emboldened to go red all over, highlighting one major accessory — such as a shoe or a bag — is all you need to stand out this season. The thigh-high leather boots at Fendi, for example, are already a hit with the fashion crowd (Kendall Jenner has been spotted wearing them off the runway) and are sure to show up on long-legged ladies this Fashion Week.

The ears have it! Now’s the time to consider swapping out your go-to delicate studs for daring danglers in sculptural shapes or shoulder-grazing textured tassels.

Combat boots

Chokers and slip dresses resurfaced in recent seasons, and this fall’s ’90s infiltration is combat boots. If you’re wondering how to style them, just look at models on and off the runway. At the shows, they were paired with everything from evening dresses at Valentino to winter coats at the Row. And on the way to a Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show fitting, model Taylor Hill (left) toughened up her flouncy mini-dress with a badass moto and an artfully unlaced pair of her own.

Sweatshirts

The line dividing athleisure and ready-to-wear is so faint right now that sweats once reserved for the gym (or the couch) are considered appropriate for work, or even a night out if you play it right. Currently, cool styles might be worn with a tulle skirt and sneakers, or a mod mini and booties a la Hailey Baldwin (at left). Don’t be afraid to make this a throwback moment: Dig out your old college pullover and wear it with flair.

Baby bags

Remember when colossal carryalls and huge hobo bags ruled the roost? Those days are over. You may not even be able to fit your phone in some of the hottest new minis (Coach’s coin purse pretty much just fits, well, coins), but no matter — consider these pint-size purses a stylish excuse for walking-and-texting.
